Ok today I saw a awesome dog

I was watching "Martha Steward" today, as it is a re-run of 'Animal Week' and I was hopeing to see the serval again (though really it's all about the caracal/karakal which is just plain awesome).

Anyway today was apparently interesting dog breeds. There was 'dredlock dog', multi-colored African dog, and 'lion' dog.

There was also one known as a schipperke.

Can I just say, that if I ever have my own house I am definatly going to try and get me a schipperke.

They only have two shedding periods (like most cats), and have water resistant fur. They are around 16lbs, and are usally jet black. Some are born tailess, and most people tend to dock normal dog's tails. However if left un-docked (I think docking is somewhat cruel) they grow to be ether low-hanging (like a German shepard's) or tightly curled (like a Pomeranian's). A schipperke has two layers of coat and has naturally occuring tuffs.

They are friendly, but require to be a part of their human's life. Otherwise they can try and get negative attention.

They originate from Belgium and were used to guard barges, aswell as for company, and to keep the barge-towing horses moving.

Awesome little-'big' dogs :)

They look kinda like a cat, mixed with a wolf, mixed with a fox.

Once again I'm a 'cat person', and tend to not like dogs.

When we lived in the Serengeti, we'd leave scraps out on the porch to feed various animals that came by, and occasionally a serval dropped by. :D Other researchers did the same thing, and one of them had a couple of porcupines that came by; we mostly had mongooses and the serval.

I've personally onle seen them on TV or in books. The one Jack had on "Larry King" was right wired.

Schipperke

Our previous two Schipperkes lived to be 15 and 13 years old, now we have an 11 month old male Schip. They are great dogs if you want a very active intelligent dog. They always want to be with you and do whatever you're doing. They have a lot of "personality" and will often make you laugh. We take ours camping, canoing, sailing, x-c skiing, hiking, etc. I highly recommend them! The most important thing though is to get one from a good reputable breeder. Believe it or not there are puppy mills that crank out poor quality Schips that only slightly resemble the true breed. Pet stores often buy from mills so avoid them too. Start with the Schipperke Club of America website, look up breeders, and so on.

I think they are awesome.

If I ever get the chance to get one (since I'll be living in appartments for the next while), I would be getting one through a breeder listed in the 'Schipperke Club of Canada'.

Puppy mills are horrible.

I like both dogs and cats fairly equally, thought I don't think I could deal with a very active dog that required a lot of attention, or any other animal with that requirement, for that matter.

Lizards, however, are just right for me.
